Earth: A Glimpse Into Our Carbon-filled Future

Earth: A Glimpse Into Our Carbon-filled Future

It’s 2009 and the concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is 387 parts per million. According to NASA climate scientist James Hansen, we need to cut our carbon emissions to get that number down to 350 ppm to avoid the truly ghastly effects of global warming. Here’s what could be in store for us if we carry on our business as usual. Click here to view the carbon dioxide infographic.

Coexistence: What Is it Good For?

Coexistence: What Is it Good For?

Sharing is part of coexisting—and that means fairly distributing land and resources, but also respecting rights and freedoms. Armed conflicts worldwide are down from a peak in the early 1990s, but we’re still enjoying an era of peace. These are the countries involved in the most skirmishes (both internal and international) since the end of World War II. Click here to see the conflict infographic.

Energy: What Renewable Energy Sources Is The World Using?

Energy: What Renewable Energy Sources Is The World Using?

Who’s generating the most electricity from renewable sources—and which ones are they using?

As of 2006, only about 18 percent of the energy produced worldwide for electricity was renewable. The bulk of that comes from hydroelectric dams—which we now know disrupt freshwater ecosystems. Other types of energy, however, are on the rise. This is a look at which countries are producing the most renewable energy for electricity. Click here to launch the renewable energy infographic.

Transparency: World Literacy Day

Transparency: World Literacy Day

September 8 is International Literacy Day, a day to focus on the benefits that literacy can bring to a developing country or community and on finding a way to bring the ability to read to the 776 million adults around the world who still lack it. Our latest Transparency is a look at the 50 countries (where data is available) that saw their literacy rates improve the most between 1970 and 2005, with each country’s literacy rate represented by the first 100 words of their constitutions.

For more on what you can do to help literacy, consider checking out our old friends at Room to Read.

Transparency: Cities Hit Hardest by Foreclosures

As the number of foreclosures continue to mount, vast swaths of American cities are becoming deserted. In some places, more than a quarter of available rentals sit empty, while other systems have largely resisted the trend. Our latest Transparency is a look at the 10 most vacant and most occupied metropolitan areas for both houses and rental apartments. It looks like you could get a great deal in Memphis.
