Hiding and Watching
I've been very struck by clear, bright, sharp images of deer posted by some contacts recently. Many have been taken at Bushey Park....a fairly open expanse of ground.
That's a complete contrast with Ashridge Forest where the fallow deer there are much more wary. And that's especially the case in fine weekend days like today. Hundreds of people converge there to walk their dogs and let their kids play. And the deer are not too keen on either of those!!!
They spend all of their time on edge - trying hard to stay out of close proximity of people and, as far as possible, shoulder deep in bracken and undergrowth.
I think this shot captures something of that. One stag watching me and another listening for a family with a dog and kids I was aware were approaching a couple of hundred yards to the left.
This was right in the middle of the forest and the light was very weak.
450mm, hand held at 1/50th.

A break in the cloud
I had a duty day at the sailing club yesterday - getting scout boats packed away for winter.
it was mostly cloudy for much of the day - this break in the dark clouds lasted only just long enough to bang a few shots off.
Better seen either large on back or original size

An interruption to cooking last night
So.....I was cooking fillet of cod on a bed of Savoy Cabbage and Smoked salmon. VERY nice even if I say so myself.
I cut the cabbage in half and noticed how cool the water drops looked - running like mercury over the leaves. A photo was called for. But it was hard to capture......150 shots later and all manner of lighting and polaroid filters later this was the best I could do!!!
Any ideas?????

Bugs
Was on duty at the dinghy sailing club today - and taking the usual mass amount of sailing shots (which I seldom post here) when these bugs got in shot.
That one in the middle is in focus and sharp - the others, well, not.
Quite like this - although really needs to be seen big here

Master of all he surveys
The light wasn't great this morning, it was annoyingly misty (not atmospheric mist - just annyong mist) and I was struggling with a "deflating" monopod!!
And the deer stayed stubornly out of range!!!
:-)
This was taken with a borrowed, old, manual, Tamron 300mm f2.8 lens with a 1.4 telconverter (equivalent to 600mm on a 35mm camera). 1/1000th at f4. As far as I can see, only a narrow plane across the line of his antlers are in focus. But I had to shoot at 3200 and even with the D300 the grain kind of killed the shot. So I whacked it through "Neat Image" to reduce the noise and ended up with this slightly painted effect. I'm thinking I like this better than I might have an ultra sharp shot!??
This guys was pretty well calling the shots on the rutting ground. No rival was much interested in coming near him. Then again, as far as I can see not many of the Does are on heat. I think we need a really cold snap (maybe with frost) for things to really kick off.
