This quintessential Southern Uplands landscape shows the slightly snow-capped Main Ridge of the Pentlands, viewed from the second gate on the Red Road, just north of Red Gate, at NT168614. The boggy, heathery path along the edge of Kitchen Moss was quite icy in places – see the bottom right of the picture.

The sign shows Balerno 4 miles to the left, Nine Mile Burn 2·5 miles to the right.

This is a hill just south-west of North Esk Reservoir, in the southern Pentland Hills near Carlops. If you are familiar with the hills around there, do you know for sure which one this is?

This is looking roughly east or north-east from the path from Spittal Farm towards the North Esk Reservoir (approx. NT166577). What is the double-topped hill in the distance? Is it Scald Law and South Black Hill? If so, where are the Kips lurking?

The hamlet of Nine Mile Burn, Midlothian. Situated nine Scots miles south/south-west of Edinburgh, on the old Roman Road, at the foot of the Pentland Hills.

When heading south from Edinburgh on the A702, this is the last village of Midlothian. After that, there be dragons – Peeblesshire, now part of the large Scottish Borders unitary authority area.
