Joyous Italian image! Do JOIN us. Add this in WM. PHILLIPS [1825-1911] "ECO-CENTENARY 2011" - UK-IRELAND-ITALY: ADD1-3: AWARD-COMMENT 1. The young London-born William Phillips toured Italy - met Garibaldi, etc. At home, he was best man for Covent Garden Opera conductor, Enrico Bevignani's wedding. A humanitarian, auctioneer & coal trader, he was also a keen reformer-environmentalist, promoting park concert bandstand gazebos; trees as community lungs; plus free education; and International Peace & Arbitration, In the 1860s, Phillips moved to S. London to raise a family - 4. William Phillips, Forest Hill . He also aided Lancashire’s starving cotton-workers, and at Mayo & Galway, enlisted his family in Famine Relief to bereft Irish cottagers. He was loved in Scotland, and in Swansea, Wales, where his now lost portrait toured in 1884.
