This is a partly-laid clutch of Willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) eggs near our campsite; they are gorgeous things, oily-looking and brown and when you see them you want to try to click them between your fingers like silver balls.

 

I took this picture while on a late evening walk, after having just disturbed the dad and flushed the mom and, happy, turned to see these proto-kids.
