Katie and the Long-eared Owl Adventure
A few days ago, we saw a long-eared owl (Asio otus) hunting voles over the mire behind the observatory. Katie and Jalle, another volunteer, went looking for its nest in the surrounding forests—and found it that night. Yesterday, Katie (who's been banding raptor chicks for a couple of years) climbed the spruce tree where the nest is to see if there were any chicks in it. In fact there was just one, and so Katie climbed back up with a few pieces of equipment to band it.
