Wiekeneer

We were in Maastricht this weekend with some friends. Maastricht is the capital of the province of Limburg and is split into two parts by the river Maas. The name is derived from the former Roman name, Mosae Trajectum, which means crossing of the Maas. The Romans founded the city around 50 B.C. The centre is located on the West border, the Eastern part is called Wijck, whch is derived from the Latin word vicus (village or homestead).

Both parts of the city have their own ambiance. This statue, created by Frans Carlier in 1985, shows the 'typical' citizen of Wijck (a Wiekeneer in the local dialect), who walks through the streets holding his hat with both hands.
Perfect for the challenge, this stack of slices.
