Entry Hall, Kotoka Airport, Accra![]() Entry hall at Kotoka Airport, Accra, Ghana
Note the soccer balls. I dig Kotoka airport – it's small, friendly, clean and colorful. Nothing like some other African airports: www.salon.com/tech/col/smith/2007/05/25/askthepilot233/ There are no jetways at Kotoka, and until recently, passengers walked directly from the gate, across the tarmac, to their plane and vice-versa. That practice is now against the rules. Apparently the airport decided that the world was not burning enough petroleum, and passengers and crew are now required take buses. The distance from plane to gate is about 300 feet, and boarding/deplaning now takes five times longer due to having to crowd people and their bags into the vehicles. Nice :-) In the 70s to the 90s, the second storey of Kotoka airport had a balcony accessible to the public. This "balcony" ran from the north wing to the south wing so basically is the area on top of the gates and you paid something like I think 10 Cedis back then to go out and take a look at the planes. What I remember most was that friends and family would often run out to the balcony and say good bye to their friends below on the tarmac as they walked across to the plane. People also threw things down to the passengers on the tarmac as they were boarding their plane. It was kinda funny :-)
