an 'incidental injury' from an 'unofficial detainment' in an alley near Queen and Spadina by Lettieiri (coffee shop) on the early early morning of June 26th - despite my plainly viewable press credentials - I was told to remain on ONE knee on the hard, dirty, alley concrete - again, early in the morning.
I had taken photos of an unidentifiable tow truck towing a police car (with NO windows and a missing tail-light), was quickly grabbed, had my new photos scoured through, and my Flash Card taken.
I had been walking along past Steve's Music on Queen, headed west, by the dawn's early light.
it was returned, the photos were deleted. realisitically, a scabby knee is nothing at all but it speaks to the larger symptom of what happened during the G20 Summit.
the police refused to ID themsleves, and had removed their Velcro ID tags - with no numbers on their helmets. when I asked, they simply said "integrated security unit...heard about it?" Duh.
I have covered more than 100 protests and official political events (ie Canadian and US elections, marches, etc.) and have NEVER experienced this anywhere - making me even more surprised that this happened in my hometown of Toronto...
