Active listening

GAA hosted a Seminar for trade unionist retirees from CWA Local 1180 on Age Discrimination. GAA interns gave short presentations about various forms of age discrimination—employment, over-medication and care-giving. Lively retirees responded with descriptions of their encounters with age discrimination. One woman advocated visiting nursing homes at irregular times, stating clearly to all staff what standards she (and the State) have for nursing care, keeping careful watch over the resident, getting to know care-giving aides and expressing appreciation for their efforts. Lawyer Edna Travis, a GAA volunteer, was on hand to suggest ways to mediate difficult encounters with overworked and strained nursing staff.
