"The garden was founded in 1989 by biologist Jim Wolfe and his wife Marta with the goal of educating visitors about Costa Rica’s native insect and butterfly populations. Jim and Marta have been hand-raising butterflies and other insects for the past sixteen years, and have a wealth of knowledge about these fragile creatures. Unlike other gardens that buy their chrysalides, all of the butterflies in the garden are bred on the premises.

The Monteverde Butterfly Garden believes in hands-on education. The biodiversity center displays insects and arachnids that are local to Monteverde, many of which are still alive. This allows visitors to have an up-close and personal experience with the creatures as they learn about their breeding and feeding habits. There is a live bug cam, as well as a case for viewing the butterflies as they emerge from their chrysalides.

Each of the four butterfly gardens represents a different Costa Rican habitat. They vary according to temperature, altitude and vegetation, ranging from hot lowlands to high-altitude cloud forests. The gardens contain more than fifty species in total, including the Calico (the only butterfly in the world to produce sound), Blue Morpho, Glass-Wings, and Zebra-Wing butterfly.

The medicinal plant garden is a self-guided tour of more than seventy plants that are used medicinally throughout the world. An information sheet lists their many – and often surprising – uses.

The final, and perhaps most fascinating, exhibit is the leafcutter ant colony. The ant colony is displayed under glass, which allows visitors to see the ants carrying leaves along a network of trails to their nest. They do this to cultivate a fungus from the decomposing vegetation that they will later use for food.

Am Nachmittag war ich noch in einem Schmetterlingsgarten gleich neben unserem Hotel. Die Leute in diesen Schmetterlings-/Schlange-/was auch immer-Gärten sind echt auf Zack. Wenn man so ein "Ding" besichtigt, dann bekommt man eine Führung, ist im Preis mit drin. Und wenn man da alleine ankommt, dann bekommt man eben eine Privatführung. So auch in dem Schmetterlingsgarten. Der freundliche Mitarbeiter hat mir erst einen Raum gezeigt, wo viele verschiedene Raupen und verpuppte Schmetterlinge, aber auch andere Insekten und Spinnentiere Costa Ricas waren. Dann habe ich ihm helfen dürfen, einige der frisch geschlüpften Schmetterlinge in den jeweiligen "Gewächshäusern" frei zu lassen. So einen Schwalbenschwanz aus einer Tupperdose zu schütteln hat schon was. :o) War wirklich beeindruckend.
Danach hat er mir den Rest der Anlage gezeigt und anschließend durfte ich noch mal selber über das Gelände, um Fotos zu machen. Leider wusste ich da noch nicht, dass der Garten um 16 Uhr schließt. Das habe ich dann gemerkt, als ich um 16.30 Uhr wieder raus wollte. Na ja, ich musste dann leider eine bereits verschlossene Tür wieder öffnen und ich habe auch niemanden gefunden, dem ich hätte Bescheid sagen können. Hoffentlich wurden an dem Tag keine Schmetterlinge gestohlen.....

The Treetop Walkway guides visitors both through and above the rainforest. A series of 8 suspension bridges, connected by trails totaling 1.9 miles (3 km) in length, provides a birds-eye view of the rainforest canopy. From these bridges – which vary from 150 ft (50 m) to 500 ft (170 m) in length and are suspended from heights ranging from 36 ft (12 m) to 180 ft (60 m) – visitors will easily be able to study this unique tropical ecosystem, catching glimpses of birds, monkeys, sloths and more as they make their way across. Im Nebelwald von Monteverde (genauer in Selvatura) haben wir einen Wipfel-Spaziergang gemacht. Da läuft man auf diversen Hängebrücken durch den Wald, eben auf Baumwipfel-Höhe. Zwischendurch geht man aber auch auf dem Waldboden. Die Brücken auf den Bildern sind alle unterschiedliche, auch wenn man das hier nur erahnen kann. Es gibt auch noch mehr Fotos davon, die sind alle im Album.

The next day we set out to do a tree-top (canopy) walk in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. But the first thing you see are hummingbirds. Loads of them. And although it was really wet we all couldn't help but try to capture these beautiful birds. "At the Selvatura Hummingbird Garden, visitors will observe more than 14 different species of hummingbirds including species that are not commonly seen in other areas of Monteverde." If I could, I would give you the names of the birds but although I bought a "Birds of Costa Rica"-Book I can't. I know these are almost all different ones but I can't figure out the names.

Am nächsten Tag waren wir dann im Monteverde Nebelwald. Da wollten wir eine Baumwipfeltour machen. Haben wir auch. Aber als allererstes, wenn man da durch den Eingang kommt, sind da Kolibris. Viele Kolibris. Ungeheuer viele Kolibris. Und da "mussten" wir dann alle erst mal versuchen, diese Juwelen mit Flügeln zu fotografieren. Es war nass und ungemütlich, aber das war egal.
Wenn ich dazu in der Lage wäre, würde ich die Vögel alle korrekt benamsen. Ich kann's aber nicht, trotz vorliegendem Costa Rica Vogelbestimmungsbuch. Irgendwie sehen die nie so aus wie auf den Bildern. Na ja, schön sind sie trotzdem.

This comes to my mind: Green. And cloudy. And wet. And humid. It's the tropics after all.
I won't post every picture I took during the three weeks but there will be a lot more in the set. I just think that you are not interested in about 50 almost identical pictures of hummingbirds... After the kind of wobbly beginning in December I will now post in chronological order and with some additional information (if available). As in every post all comment pictures are clickable.

Wenn ich an Costa Rica denke, fällt mir als erstes grün ein. Dicht gefolgt von schwül, warm, bewölkt und nass. Na ja, es liegt halt in den Tropen und da kann es eben auch mal regnen.
Ich werde hier nicht jedes einzelne Bild posten, was ich im Urlaub aufgenommen habe, noch nicht mal alle, die ich dann bearbeitet habe. Aber zusätzlich zu denen, die ich in den Posts zeige, gibt es im Album noch mehr. Die schalte ich dann nach und nach frei. (Ich kann mir nur nicht vorstellen, dass Ihr in einem Post ca. 50 nahezu identische Fotos von Kolibris sehen wollt.) Nachdem ich im Dezember ja ein wenig überstürzt einige Fotos gezeigt habe, geht es jetzt chronologisch weiter. Und wenn ich welche habe, kommen auch noch zusätzliche Infos. (Ihr kennt das von meinen anderen Fernreisen.) Wie immer sind alle Kommentarbilder anklickbar.
