wow those look great! I am helping my daughter's school do a tire garden and we are going to grow strawberries in hopes that the kids will see how we get our food and enjoy the fruits of our labor. I will look at these for hope while we do it.

thanks, all! we are yielding about handful a day. not too bad for a tiny backyard garden.

verabee, I swear these are from our garden! we didn't even make it to sauvie island that day... too much to do before the big SF trip! hoping we'll get to go when we get back.

kathyb, great idea! strawberry plants are pretty hardy and perfect for teaching kids, I think. can't tell you how excited ava and ezra were when ours started to grow and ripen. we have both kinds: ever-bearing and june-bearing. I suggest planting both. the june-bearing ones are sweeter and slightly larger but you only get them in june. the ever-bearing ones come all summer long but they seem to be smaller, not so sweet. both kinds are good, though. good luck and happy planting!

Aw geeze, go! There should still be some this weekend but after that it's gonna be kind of lame. Though even if the strawberries don't work out we're a week and a half away from raspberries. Which involve less crouching.

(I am such a berry-picking dork.)

I know, right? so torn that friday morning because I knew it'd be slim pickins when we got back. although we'll probably still go. and big yes to the raspberries. at least there's that. also, just discovered where a million blackberry bushes are in the neighborhood. it's the summer of berries. I am officially deeming the summer of 2008 as the the summer of berries.
