The red flag on a temple's roof in Vanarsi (Benares) is a banner for the two children who have conquered it. From their vantage point, they throw water at passerbys on the street below, a taste of the Holi festival that will start on the following day. During Holi, people battle each other by throwing bags of coloured water at each other.
