Recycled!

Recycled! by ghb624.
A bale of mashed beverage cans that have been collected and sold to an aluminum recycling company. In this view we're seeing most of one side of a single bale. The bales -- each weighing about 700 pounds -- are stacked up in preparation for being sent to a smelting plant, where they'll be converted back to pure aluminum ingots. It -- the recycling, that is -- is a long and winding road. Mundane a business as it is, though, it provides opportunities for money to be made at various stages along the way. And eventually results in a cleaner environment, thank goodness.
Incidentally, based on a really rough estimate, one such bale may contain as many as 20,000 cans.

Thanks, Neil & Tom. What really amazes me though is how this gives another insight into the vast scale on which canned beverages are consumed.

Appreciate it Jim.
Tom, re a "very very large print" -- it would work for me but it's interesting to try and imagine my wife's reaction if I hung a 40x60 in the living room!

Never mind your living room -- this needs to be in a gallery! As soon as I get mine opened, I'll be in touch :)

This is a mind-boggling, thought-provoking shot. Good for my brother at Pepsi, I suppose (although I do see a high percentage of Coke cans in there), and good that they're being recycled, but wow -- we sure do guzzle a lot of that stuff!

Rich -- I did take a look and saw that you are using my photo already. I'm aware of the interest in being timely with postings. However, the right way to do this (as you're probably aware) is to request permission and only when it's been granted, proceed with publishing or posting the image. That is the procedure I normally see, and in most cases I'm happy to grant permission. But it's not good business to take first and ask permission afterward.

I totally agree, Jerry. While it is definitely a worthy image and I love everything behind it - that's the point. And it's yours. First, last and until you say so. You're very kind to not be in throttle mode.

Hi Jerry!

I'm so sorry to infringe on your permission by way of my own haste. If you would like us to remove your photo we will do so at once.

If you're okay with leaving it, I'd be happy to add you to the Photography Friends section of the Links thread and use your image as a rotating flash display with a link directed to your site visible on every page. Of course the existing accreditation line at the end of the post will be changed to your specifications.

Admittedly, I've had different experiences with different contributors as per flickr publishing protocol versus standard publishing protocol and I'm constantly adding to the list. Some people never respond and others respond with eagerness to contribute. I'm all for honoring everyone's wishes.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed and thank you for sharing such a fantastic image.

Many kind regards,

Rich

Wow over 200,000 cans in one bale! It really does highlight how much we consume as a nation! Pictures like this really reinforce the need for people to recycle as if these many cans are just put in general bins it would really harm the environment.

Hi,
This image - and all others on this subject, "collections, lots of (whatever), miscellaneous, patterns, textures, persevering and/or very detailed studies images etc." - would be lovely on our very new group, called ALL COLLECTIONS

If you accept the invitation, it is not necessary to ask to join the group. Just click on link and say "hi" :-)

It would be adorable have you there.
