Shadrach's whistle by caribbeanfreephoto

Shadrach's whistle

One from the "things you come across when you're moving house" files. My maternal great-grandfather, Shadrach Quarless, was a policeman on the Port of Spain port. This is his whistle. It was made in the USA and the ball inside is made of cork.

Preparing to cast the lintels by caribbeanfreephoto

Preparing to cast the lintels

Here are Ronald and Wesley putting finishing touches on the boxing for the lintel over the front door, in preparation for casting tomorrow.

I'm not Jewish, but I cannot hear the word "lintel" without thinking of Passover. You know, the lamb's blood on the lintels and doorposts and all that. Pair that with the word "cast" and you're in solid Old Testament territory.

The first time I ever heard the word "lintel" may well have been in Scripture class, which, at the school I attended, pretty much amounted to a course in comparative religion.

Taking shape

The walls of the upper storey are about halfway complete.

In other news, after experiencing the treehouse-like effect of having the starch mango tree branches just outside the window of the upper floor, I've decided not to remove the tree after all. It's harbouring termites and the roots were encroaching on the original foundation of the house, but that's nothing some pest control and a bit of strategic pruning shouldn't be able to take care of, right? Right?

I'm really looking forward to the morning birdsong and to being able to pluck fruit simply by reaching through the window.
