      Patten leather I suppose was a new thing during the 1800s that one would want to parade proudly, robustly on one's head?

      I bet when he got older he hid this picture from his grandchildren. He's probably spinning in his grave right now knowing that over 150 years later the public is looking at "that picture." Goes to show, you can never live down on impulsive fashion mistake!
