"Albert Sands Southworth (1811–94) was half of the important and influential Southworth & Hawes daguerreotype studio, which he operated with Josiah Johnson Hawes (1808–1901) from 1843 to 1863."

I agree. Shirtless is quite a modern concept for that time.

Don't know if anyone would know history of the day, but is it not a bit unusual to have a portrait of a shirtless man AT THAT TIME ?

"is it not a bit unusual to have a portrait of a shirtless man AT THAT TIME ?"

not really.

you had both ingres and david doing shirtless male figures earlier in the century.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_Socrates

www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/fnart/art/19th/pain ting/ingres_...

and there has always been a long history of the shirtless male in classical art, from greek statuary to depictions of the crucifixion.

so no, i don't think there's anything particularly unusual about the fact that he's shirtless.

i mean, the raft of the medusa was showcased in london to over 40,000 people in 1820.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Raft_of_the_Medusa

and it's absolutely brimming with topless [and bottomless] men.

Southworth was a student of Samuel F.B. Morse, who, in addition to his other more famous pursuits, was an avid daguerreotypist. The partnership's studio, located on the top floor of a Boston building, had enormous skylights to allow in copious amounts of light necessary for relatively "short" exposures of portraits of their subjects. While they worked in formats ranging from the more common locket-sized daguerreotype, up to a stereoscopic image (also gaining in popularity at the time), they specialized in "whole plate" images, an expensive size which measured 6-1/2 × 8-1/2 inches (16.5 × 21.6 cm)—rather large for a daguerreotype
