The centerpiece of the city, the Shwedagon Pagodathe is a golden, glittering pagoda and stupa located in Yangon, Burma. The shrine is visible from every vantage point in Yangon and dates back to between the 6th and 10th centuries. A series of smaller stupas and a marble pathway surround the main stupa which is completely solid and covered in gold, its upper parts are said to be studdded with diamonds. The site is the holiest Buddhist shrine in Myanmar with legends saying it contains relics of many former Buddhas.
