Perkins Prothro Ranch

Our House. I lived here 1st - 3rd grade then 8th grade till 3 weeks after graduation. Then I got married, and moved to 'the big city' it's about a 9 1/2 hour drive away.
My grandparents lived here while I was growing up. I was pretty convinced it was haunted.
The "Big Barn" Full of all kinds of fun stuff to climb on.
The Hay Barn. Smells great. A great place to climb. Or watch your boyfriend practice throwing baseballs. Not good for rolling in the hay though, that stuff is kinda prickly, not very comfortable, I don't know how they came up with that for the movies.
Bunk House. Single hired hands lived here. They ate meals with us. Each time they'd hire a new guy we'd pray he was young and cute. But no matter what he looked like, he was always a cowboy, and often a drunk... I'm not attracted to cowboys or drunks...
Milk Barn. In 3rd grade, we had a calf with 3 nostrils. We took turns feeding it a bottle each morning before school. The walk was cold, the milk smelled bad. One day, I wished the snot covered cow was dead. When I got to the barn, I found that he was.
This is where we kept the beef steers. Translation: "The cows we ate." Mmm steak anyone? Beef Steers are very good at staring contests... You have to look away, cause you think they'll charge, but if you lose just yell "Hamburger"... Gets em everytime.
Horse Corral. I rarely rode the horses. But did enjoy hiding in the troughs and stables and pretending they were prisons. Also did donuts in the soft dirt on my motorcycle.
The "Pit" where we burried our trash. Each end of the pit had a big hill of dirt. I once jumped one with my motorcycle and ended up in the hospital with amnesia...
Chicken Yard. When we were small it had lots of poplar trees, which were very cool to play in. We'd threaten the chickens, telling them we'd eat them if they didn't lay eggs... 7 yr olds are mean.
The Pond. For the cattle, but occasionally people would try to go fishing.
My cousins lived here while I was in high school.
The Garden. When we were small we made cities in the dirt with our tonka trucks. When I was in college I helped my mom plant onions... I put all the bulbs in upside down.
The Prothro's house. They didn't live here, but used the house when they visited. They flew here. There is an airstrip to the southwest just past the pond. At age 8, I dreamed of building a plane. I looked for parts in the Sears & Roebuck catalog.
The front road. About a mile long, leading to the Oklahoma, Texas State Line. Taking this road, it was 30 miles to Boise City, OK where I attended high school, 40 miles to Dalhart, where my future husband lived. I loved to run or walk down this road.
The Back Road. Dirt. Only 20 miles to school if you go this route, but much of the trip is bumpy dirt roads. Watch out for cows!
Pasture. When we were 7 we went on a great adventure into this pasture. We found a cow bone and were convinced we'd discovered a dinosaur.
This was a great place to ride motorcycles... I once played tag with an antelope... it waited for me while I fixed my bike.
Final resting place of Flip and Flop. Two bunnies that we shot planning to eat... Dad told us we couldn't eat them. There wasn't an 'R' in the month. We had quite the funeral. They were called Flip and Flop cause that's what they did when we shot them
The Old Pit. It was newly dug when we were little. It was here that we painted a discarded horse trailer and turned it into a club house. I also set off a bomb made out of Old Spice aftershave and a toilet paper tube.
Small water tank where we taught my sister's cat how to swim... Muhahaha!
Nice open grassy spot at the end of the yard. Good for praying, treasure hunts, watching stars, kissing, baseball, golf and playing 'Indians' with cousins... which usually includes eating weird stuff, making bows and arrows, and tying Dusty to the tree.

Here's a photo of 'the ranch'. My family lived there for years. My great grandfather, my grandpa, and my uncle were all foremen. Over 3 years ago, the owner died and his son laid off our family. As if our entire clan hadn't called the place home for 50 years.

I'm not really bitter, just slightly homesick.

My parents moved to a great new place which is bound to have wonderful memories.

It just bothers me that my kids will never get to visit where their great-great grandparents, great grandparents, grandparents and mom lived.
