In this part of Illinois (Kane County) - among many parts of North America - all of our ash trees are dead or dying because of the emerald ash borer beetle. This beetle came here from Asia in the wood of crates containing the many imports we get from that part of the world. Unfortunately, this beetle was not compatible with the local species of ash tree. In my immediate area, up to 40% of trees in parks and city areas are dying from this invasive insect.
Some people figured that the remaining trees could stand with a little decor to memorialize their plight.
