Thank you one and all. I would especially like to thank you for the many FAVs and your appreciation of agatized dinosaur bone even though many of my photos were blurry, badly cropped, etc. Just goes to prove that nature's beauty shines through no matter how badly photographed. Or else you guys just like me! :))D

I was thinking calendar.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you. I think this would make an interesting quilt.

Has anyone noticed the new "photo stats" under additional information on your photos page? You can tell if someone is using your photos without permission and all kinds of other interesting stuff. Appears this photo has been hijacked by several blogs which accounts for the over 850 views. Well, I wanted the world to learn about adb, guess I've succeeded.

FABULOUS! I have a question for you. I just cut some dino bone that wasn't really silicated, more of the hardness of picasso marble or such. The cells have silvery, shimmery, sparkly flashes in them, almost chatoyant, and are very beautiful. DO you know what causes this? I'm thinking that they may be little calcites or feldspars that cause the optical effect. I'm making the rough into centerpiece pendant beads. Thanks for any info and thanks for sharing those beautiful photos. I have a few slabs of dino bone that is agatized where the cells are totally translucent. very pretty stuff.

Regards, David at DVHdesigns

David - It is possible that the optical effect you are seeing is due to a different microcrystalline structure in the cells than the surrounding walls (a polymorph). Maybe not. It's hard to say without seeing the piece. It sounds fascinating. You may be able to identify the mineral components by placing the bone under a black light then researching the fluorescent colors.

That translucent spider web bone is highly desireable and should work into beautiful caboshons or beads.

Thanks for stopping by!

I'm overwhelmed by all the attention this mosiac has received. According to this photos stats it was posted on a web site called Making Light, then picked up by Cory Doctorow on BoingBoing and it took off from there. WOW! Appears the world was just starving for some agatized dinosaur bone photos. Glad I could satisfy their appetite. :))D

Thanks everyone for the comments and FAVs. This has really made my day. Again, thank you all.

Hi again, you actually inspired me to open a flickr account so I could share the pics of my dinosaur bone beads! I've uploaded several and they sort of show the chatoyant shimmer in the cells. I'm really curious what causes it. Thanks again for your beautiful mosaic!

Welcome to Flickr Dave, you'll never be sorry you joined. Looked at your photos and you do nice work. I'll show your photos to one of my bone hunter friends, as soon as he gets back from Quartzite, who can identify anything in bone.

I suggest you join several of the mineral and gem groups, i.e. Minerals and rocks and fossils (just key in the tag "minerals" into a group search) and jewelry groups. This will really get your work "out there" and help you meet people with very rare material.

Good luck and enjoy!

The first time I saw a piece of agatized dinosaur bone I was hooked. Just the thought of holding a piece of stone in my hand that had walked the earth over 150 mya boggled my mind. The processes nature used to create the wonderful colors and patterns of the agate fascinated me. To hike the Morrison Formation of Utah knowing that dinosuars had walked on this same ground.... WOW!

As dgriffinbly wrote, "the world is so full of wonders," wonders I hope you all get to see, walk, hike, climb, and enjoy.

Thank you all for sharing my love of this force of nature.

BTW: I have replaced the original photo with a hi-res photo (created in Big Huge Labs) for those who wanted to use this image as a screensaver. Hope it works.

Thanks eva! I can hardly wait for spring so I can go bone hunting again. Went for a hike this morning in Forest Park just to get the muscles in shape. I am definitely in need of some exercise and lucky to have a place like Forest Park with all its trails and hills only 5 minutres away. So until March its a meeting with the trees, leaves, horse poop, dog walkers and dogs every morning at 7 a.m.

Hey eva baby, long time no see. I'll try to get a copy of the movie, it looks very interesting.

Many years ago I read that a few months after the release of the book, Olean was able to build a $2 millon home in Westchester with the royalties! See what hard work, an original idea, and a great talent can do for you!

I'm thinking of writing a book based on my experiences with people in the rock collecting field titled "The Opportunists!" LOL!! What a life! I miss it!

How are you and all the kitties doing? I applaud your volunteer work at the cat shelter. Speaking of shelter animals, did you know that Bubba died? Very, very sad.

Take care gal!

BTW, I'm considering the additiion of an older german shepard to my family, but I'm concerned about Peanut's reaction. Any suggestions?

eva101  Pro User  says:

Lo! I could not find you and now I see why: flickr changed, you changed! I finally visited utah although not hunting dinos, just hiking and snapping pics. Will definitely return.

Bring in the shepard without committing yuouself to adoption and see how Peanut reacts. Some kitties can never be convinced to love dogs, but it may work fine. you may want to consult an experienced animal rescuer for advice tho.

Good to have found you again!

Hey gals!

patchy, which of Tolkien's versions do you prefer:

All that is gold does not glitter;
all that is long does not last;
All that is old does not wither;
not all that is over is past.

Not all that have fallen are vanquished;
a king may yet be without crown,
A blade that was broken be brandished;
and towers that were strong may fall down.

or the one that appeared in Lord of the Rings?

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
