Thanks for replying to my questions about your bike!

I have now had the Civia fork for a little while, and over my old Cannondale aluminum fork it is a marked improvement. The fork was originally made for your bike, so since my '06 Bad Boy is actually very similar to it I tried it out. It's nothing special, but just right.

The Topit rack has so much potential, but maybe not for what I originally imagined I would use it for. I wanted a platform to mount an iPad (with GPS!) to, and I was looking around for a foundation to that platform, and this rack seemed to fit the bill. The problem is I have yet to find an intermediate, between the ipad and the rack. I researched motorcycle tank bags, bicycle handlebar bags, etc., and I have come to the conclusion that bicycling as transportation isn't yet fully integrated into the 21st century.

On a side note, I am curious why you chose the Wald basket for your bike, and not a ready-made Racktime basket. They click in and you can lock them down with a key. I bought the Snapit adapter in the hopes of finding a bag to attach it to (see the above paragraph), but I haven't succeeded yet. I'm not sure a bag-in-basket idea would work, because I have drop hadlebars. Either way, with the Snapit adapter you can tighten the basket it and snap it in and out of the rack quite easily.

Hi David, the reason I chose the Wald over the Racktime is simple: The Racktime basket is 1,5 kg - the Wald is way lighter. Don't have a listed weight for the 137 and never put in on a scale myself, but I guess it's in the 250 grams ballpark. I also prefer having the cargo space available at all times, hence no need to ever dismount the basket. The Wald is light and nimble, and never in the way.

Good luck with your iPad project!

      Greetings from Virginia!

I am just now starting to put a Lumotec IQ CYO RT onto a Racktime front rack and am having a lot of trouble getting the hardware to work with the light. Did you have to bend or otherwise modify the mounting hardware in order to get it to fit?

      Many thanks,

      John

      Hi John!

Oh yes, I did indeed bend the hardware :-)

Those two stainless steel plates did not match the light mount - but a slightly rough little session with pliers worked wonders. As you see from this shot, I also had to put on a few washers on each side of the light, because the gap turned out to be wider than the light:

It all required a little swearing, I admit, but the hassle was soon forgotten when I had my first night ride :-) Good luck to you!

      Cheers,

      Success!!

I first flattened the mounting plates in a vise, then carefully made a new fold in them by tapping on them with a wooden hammer. They then lined with the light just right, but like yours they had room to spare, so I threw in a few small nylon washers. Once I tightened everything up it's hard to tell it wasn't designed this way.

Many thanks, Geir, for giving me the confidence to mangle up the mounting plates!

      Hello again!

I hope you'll tolerate another pesky question or two. I'm just beginning to put the front rack on the bike (which finally showed up after a too long delay). The braze-ons on the fork on the new bike (a Rivendell A Homer Hilsen named Milo) are higher than I expected. If I use them, the distance between the top of my fender and the rack's platform would be about 12.4cm. It seems too high, but maybe not. Do you mind telling me this distance on your bike? Also, I think I'd need to bend the metal strut to accommodate this steeper angle. Did you need to bend yours? From the picture it looks as if this might be the case.

As a first pass I used the strut unbent, but had to move the rack forward to get the light to sufficiently clear the tire. I also had to use cable clamps instead of the braze-ons. The height from the top of the fender to the top of the rack platform is about 4.8cm in this configuration. I took a bad picture, my very first Flickr upload, at:

to show what it looks like.

Did you try this setup too, or did you just go directly to the more elevated rack position?

      Many thanks,

      John

Hi John, and big congrats with the super nice bike! I'll gladly measure my setup, but will have to wait a few days as I'm not having the bike where I am this week.

I'd say your measurement of about 12-13 cm seems right, though. I never tried another setup, I just put the rack on the fork right away - and yes, that also included some effort with a pair of pliers to bend the metal strut.

I did indeed contemplate, after an initial worry about the elevated rack, about getting a pair of those clamps to move the rack further down (or getting a Nitto rack, because they seem so nice and compact and would probably hold my basket just as good. I guess they would fit right onto your braze-ons, too...). But I soon realized that in real life riding situations, this wasn't a big deal for me. I use the basket all the time for all kinds of stuff and can't say I've been noticing any effects of this higher center of gravity.

Ideally, I'd like to have it as low as yours. But for any practical reasons, it works fine as it is. Good luck with your new bike, John, hope you'll be happy with the rack.
