Rough hewn

The texture on these bristlecone pines are amazing - the sand and snow sculpts them over the thousands of years they are alive. Even a small branch feels extremely solid and dense. There is a big stand of them in the White Mountains east of Bishop, California.

Spending time with living things that are so old starts you thinking about life, death and the relative nature of time

You can identify a bristlecone pine that is more than a 1,000 years old because their roots become exposed... so this particular tree must be a few thou old. The trees are able to kill off any branches that are in the shade, as well as use only one section of the tree for growth (and keep bark on that part of the tree) so that just that part can be supplied with nutrients. The hardiness of these trees is amazing!
