Shine on GUM Mall

    Newer Older

The exterior of GUM Mall on Red Square during a light rain. Behind me was Lenin's tomb, and to my right was the famous St Basil's Cathedral (as many non-Russians would recognize as the Tetris building...)

Technique: 5 exposure HDR (-2,1,matrix metering,1,2). There were many people walking around, so I took the extra step of multiple shots at each exposure. All shots of a given exposure were exported from Lightroom and stacked into a smart layer in Photoshop CS3 (via script) with blending mode set to "median" (the standard trick to get rid of people and such via Photoshop). HDR tonemapped in Photomatix. I couldn't get the right blending, so I processed it three times (with different levels of light blending), then layered these in Photoshop and used gradient / painted layer masks to blend the layers to create the effect I wanted. A vignette was added in Adobe Lightroom, and blue color was boosted just a little to give the sky more effect. Slight sharpening and clarity added as well.

Thank you so much for your HDR technique info. I'm going to visit moscow in 1 week. I'm deciding to take multiple shots as you are describing. I didn't know how to deal with the people around before. It's just a fantastic shot of the GUM shopping mall. Thank you again for sharing that great photo with the public.
