This is Mickey, sorry about the poor picture but this is the wild mouse my wife found in our garden with a badly injured front leg. Not really knowing what to do but feeling so sorry for him as he was so tiny (even for a mouse!!) and because it was late at night we put him in a box and took him indoors to try and make him as comfortable as we could as we didnt think he would make it through the night.
We were therefore totally amazed to find the next morning he was still alive and seemed to have eaten some crumbs we had given him the night before so as he seemed to be such a little fighter we decided to take him to our local vets - Westways in Houghton le Spring for advice, explaining that if anything could be done for him we were willing to take him home and provide the aftercare needed. We were expecting a call to say that the best thing would be to put him to sleep but imagine our surprise when they rang to say that as long as we would take care of him Jason, their vet at the Stanley branch was willing to try and amputate the leg but we had to be prepared that he might not make it through the operation. We had to give the little fella a chance and the vet totally agreed!! One hour later we got the call to say he had pulled through and was in the recovery room doing fine - he truly was a little fighter. We picked him up later that day and the staff at the surgery were so helpful and asked us to take him back in a few days for a check up incase there was any sign of infection. This we did and everything has healed fine and he has totally recovered and is totally enjoying his new home and toys.
We just wanted to tell this lovely story to show for all the bad there is in this world there are people willing to go the extra mile to give even the smallest of creatures a fighting chance. We would like to say a big thankyou to all the staff at Westway vets for all their help and for caring - especially as this was all done free of charge and for giving up their time to help and ofcourse a big big thankyou from Mickey!!!
ps - any advice on looking after mice would be really welcome!!!!!
