They did not look like that, I am sure. Stereum ostrea are not coloured as widely as that.

Fabulous photo and sighting. I believe you will find these are called Turkeytail fungus. They are truly one of the most striking and beautiful sights of the woodlands, brilliant stuff, lucky you for finding them.
