Cape Moreton Lighthouse was built from local sandstone in 1847 by the
NSW Government. QLD was not declared a separate state until 2 years
later….ok ok, I know what you NSW folks now say.
It was built because of the increasing traffic to the northern coast ,
but for a long time was the only light on the 3,236 miles of
coastline.
The entrance into Moreton Bay is scattered with wrecks that attest the
notoriousness of the bay.
Standing 23m high, this structure is the only example of a stone lighthouse in Queensland. Rare elements including external masonry and internal cast ironstairs cases still remain intact.
The original light source oil wick. It was converted in in 1930 to pressurised acetylene gas. This installation did not continue for long as in 1937 the apparatus was converted to 240v electricity. Today the Cape Moreton Lighthouse is fully solar powered and automated and plays an important part in the Australian east coast navigation network.
