Does the foam Really do anything? It's not even covering the walls...

  3. garrettmurray (68 months ago | reply)

@.ben. You'd be surprised. The foam doesn't need to cover the walls, it just needs to absorb bounce. The difference is staggering. (Note that it's also in a few places on the ceiling and behind the chair.)

This looks most excellent. I really like the file cabinet with the hard drives on top solution.

Are you going to pick up a UPS now that you are on a battery? Maybe you had one already with those hard drives. I have one and it's actually come in handy (i have yet to buy a house <50yrs old - even with updated wiring I can't account for the power coming into the house.

Is the ACD on a VESA monitor arm?

    3 Q's:

    - How's that Razer mouse for Mac? I've seen it in the Apple Store, but never tried one. Are the extra pixels noticed?
    - Holy mouse pad!
    - Are there Mac drivers for the Dell printer?

um, most important thing: where'd shawn find that hat and where can i get one like it? omg.

  8. garrettmurray (68 months ago | reply)

@BrianWarren I don't have a UPS, but I need to get one. I've been meaning to for a long time but never got around to it. I think more than anything I want UPS just for safe shut down. At the same time (knock on wood), we don't have many power outages in NYC. Granted, when we do, they're BIG.

@JohnPastor Yep. It's on an Ergotron LX arm. Makes it convenient to get the display closer sometimes when my eyes are tired, or to turn it vertical when I want a lot of text on screen at once for large files.

@macfixer The Razer mouse is actually really great. It's really, really smooth. I'm going to write about it soon. And yeah, the mouse pad is HUGE. But it's so good! And for the personal laser printer you don't need any drivers other than the Gutenprint (formerly GIMP) drivers that come with OS X.

@mathewh At a local hipster store. If you want, I can look there again and see if they still have them?

That's like the big brother of my setup, I just got a 20" ACD and 20" iMac - http://flickr.com/photos/suburbia_org_uk/1515 387378/.

I was curious about the display arm on the ACD too, on my setup the iMac screen is about 3 or 4 cm higher than the ACD, not a big deal but it kind of makes me want to level them out.

I used one of those Del laser printers before and they are actually pretty good. I think it's actually a Lexmark printer underneath the Dell badge, at least the one I used was.

Garrett, yep that's why I bought a UPS for when I had my iMac - to be able to safely shut down my computer if the power went out. At my old house we'd have little power blips - just for a half-second - rarely long enough to reset the clocks. The UPS took care of those too - giving good clean power.

They're huge though. A pain to lug around and find a good place for. Still, it's a well-spent $50.

  11. garrettmurray (68 months ago | reply)

@RickCurran You could also do something like what <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/andalltha tmalarkey/1365932518/"Andy did for your display to be even. Obviously there are added benefits to the arm, though.

@jorgeq Basically all the furniture in my apartment is IKEA. I can't imagine what I'd do if I lived in a place where there wasn't one.

@BrianWarren Yeah, that might be a problem in my tiny room...

@garrett: it is dangerous to tempt this fella with hats of such loveliness. hehe. i simply cannot resist - unless the price is not right. hehe.

  14. garrettmurray (68 months ago | reply)

I was wondering if that that extra piece of deskpace was made from IKEA too? I was looking into expanding my workspace.. but I always thought I'd have to buy another desk. Just let me know!

  22. garrettmurray (65 months ago | reply)

    It's all IKEA, yes.

  23. camh (65 months ago | reply)

    Hey Garret.

I'm going to buy a 24" iMac soon, and I was going to get a ACD with it. How do you like the 24" with the 23" inch ACD?

I've heard that dual screen boost productivity, but I've also heard that two same-size screen can be hard to subconsciously differentiate between them. So I'm deciding between a 23" ACD or a 20" one.

How is it working for you?

  24. garrettmurray (65 months ago | reply)

@camh In short: It's fantastic. Definitely no issues differentiating and they work beautifully together. Highly recommended!

  25. camh (65 months ago | reply)

@garret Cool, thanks for the info! I think I'm gonna go for the 23" ACD, I want as much screen space as possible. And if I don't get it when I can, I bet I'll regret it.

And I'm gonna use this stand to raise the ACD to the same level as the iMac, like you have with the Ergotron arm.

The file cabinet with the drives and modem on it is pretty genius... so tell me, GALANT brother, what is the name of said file cabinet?

  27. garrettmurray (65 months ago | reply)

It's also a GALANT piece. I'm not sure they make it anymore, but they make a very similar version still.

Do you accumulate a lot of dust in this room? Where are you located? The reason I ask is that I live in Mission Beach, Ca. in an older apartment building and I am constantly battling dust! Arrgghh!!!
Just curious because I try and care for my equipment as best as I can.
