Winging It

Don hearman sent me an excellent article on taking pictures of birds in flight with a point and shoot digital camera. With his help, I got together the parts, and these are the first tries with it. I think it's going to work out great. Thanks, Don, that's one frustration I won't have to deal with any more.

This picture's from the article, and shows the setup on a similar camera.

      Gun sight

Here's another example of its work. It makes it possible to track your target in real time, even though the picture on the display freezes when the camera locks focus. Neat, eh?

Hey, Jim!!! Long time no write, but that doesn't mean I haven't been thinking of you. As a matter of fact, I thought a lot about you just the day before yesterday, during carnaval. As a matter of fact, I even boasted about you -- there were two Canadians from Cirque du Soleil standing nex to me, and I told them I have this friend up there who is The Best with birds... and I hadn't even seen these! Later during the week I'll see if I have enough pictures to put together a special set for you, like I did last year. Much love from your amiga in Rio.

Wow!! The photos are pretty amazing though I sure most of the credit still goes to the photographer!!

I've been down with a cold and haven't thanked you properly for the photo for the fence. We have yet to hear from the gentleman again, he must of taken our email down wrong. Assuming we would be hearing from him, we didn't bother to ask for contact information.

Oh boy!!! now you just have to figure out how to attach the whole contraption directly to your head so you are always ready.... it might make it hard to eat your peas with it strapped on though.

Jim you got to check this out ..... if you don't like the whales I know you will love the glorious wreck at the end.

Definitely seemed to work pretty well - I wonder how much of the technique can be converted to dSLR cameras?

Great job, Jim. I got all excited when I read the article (Thanks, Don) but realized that I don't have the flash hot shoe on my Canon S3IS. Well, there'll be other cameras. You certainly did a good job on these two and now we know there'll be many more.

    44. KmacN (76 months ago | reply)

Wow what excellent shots. The article is interesting too. My new camera doesn't have a hot shoe I figured I wouldn't ever use one . ..too bad , this is a good idea.

    45. mimbrava (76 months ago | reply)

Oh, too bad my camera doesn't have the flash hot shoe either. :-( These shots of yours are fabulous, especially for your first ones. Bravo, Jim!

That is waaaaaaaay cool! Look out Beethoven. :)

I know nothing about gun sights... does this make like an extra-large viewfinder? That would be handy on my DSLR as well.

    47. figment (76 months ago | reply)

this is fantastic. you've definitely got the bird in flight thing down with the first try!

    48. prairiedog (in and out) (76 months ago | reply)

Thanks for the advice and that is a whoppin' great pan shot!

    49. latenightowl (76 months ago | reply)

Sounds great. I went ahead and ordered the setup to try on the Nikon D200. My eyesight not being what it used to be plus tri-focal glasses make the viewfinder a challenge sometimes.

They're just backyard oyster beds. I suppose anyone who wants to muck their way through the marsh mud could go out and collect them. I don't care for oysters myself. (figures, huh?) I see people hand-casting shrimp nets out there sometimes too. And I've been known to put out a crab trap in years past. The coons and gulls tell me it's a great place to catch fiddlers, and as you know, I get an assortment of herons and egrets. It's a lively place... much too busy for a commercial operation. :)

A-ha, you too were bit by the bird-in-flight bug. Looks like there is no cure for that, as you can see at Don's and Greg's flickr. Those are great, just be careful with what you are asking for... if you know what a mean... hope no souvenir was dropped from above.
I will look forward to seeing a series like this with Beethoven.
