Eddie Reed Big Band @ The JI Lounge August 14th 2009
The Pasadena Jazz Institute and Jaime Munoz present the Eddie Reed Big Band.
An Eddie Reed Big Band performance is a lesson in authenticity and a demonstration of the creative flexibility of one of the most exciting and powerful sounds of 20th Century American music. Featuring
a full seventeen piece big band and special guest vocalists Mather Louth. The evening will be emceed by magician Erik Tait.
His Big Band represents a true link to the swing era. Reed has played with Artie Shaw, Anita O'Day, Helen Forrest, Abe Most, and The Inkspots. His devotion to authenticity and his technical mastery of
the sound of the best of the seminal bands of the swing era pervades every aspect of his performance. "1939 was the year when jazz was
really at its best,” Reed says, “Before that, the sound was too tight; after, it was too deep. I don't mind admitting I modeled my band after my heroes and use a lot of their music."
An Eddie Reed Big Band performance is more, however, than a brilliantly crafted reincarnation of the big band jazz sound. With compositions that are both a tribute to the greatest big bands of the
past and new pieces that are modern re-working of swing, he has made big band swinging jazz a permanent part of the music lexicon of the
21st Century.
