Hex

Hex by Gale Franey.
I've been so busy lately. Hardly a moment to relax and do my own art. I've been teaching Photoshop at BCIT, totally enjoying it and also working on another children's book and a few other projects. I finally had a few moments to myself to relax and play in Photoshop.

I've just bought an Intuos 4 tablet, very nice.

So nice to see a post from you! I love your talent and creativity! This has a wonderful aura. I feel pretty comfortable using Photoshop to manipulate my photos, but to create from scratch, as you do, seems to be beyond me. I attended a Bert Monroy seminar a few years ago, before I had the knowledge of Photoshop that I have today...and it was a supreme waste of money. I wish I could hear that day-long seminar today...I would be able to comprehend and use the knowledge now! Keep creating (when you have the time)...I love to see your art!

I'm wondering if Intuos 4 tablet is just another gadget?

Gale Franey  Pro User  says:

Thank you everyone for such kind comments.

Glorielle ... The Intuos 4 tablet is useful if you are doing any paint strokes that mimic real life paint strokes. It has a pad filled with sensors that detect the amount of pressure of each stroke which enables it to draw the lightness and thickness of a stroke as if you were actually painting or drawing with a pen, (ie: calligraphy). It will add those beautiful tapered edges to a stroke. This cannot be done with a mouse.

Photoshop's brush engine is set up so you can set the Brush settings to the tablet's "pen pressure" or "pen tilt".

However, most of my Photoshop work is done with a regular mouse. But important to note that when I teach Photoshop I tell students that they should purchase a very zippy, light weight mouse. If it is cordless it should have only one battery (2 batteries is too heavy). I use a regular Microsoft cordless mouse for most of my work. I only use the Wacom tablet when I do detailed painting on the image. On my Mac computer I tried the Mac mouse but find it too heavy and it doesn't fit comfortably in my hand for doing digital art. The comfort, ligtness and zippiness of a mouse is of prime importance.

I understand Gale, but it strangely resembles to using a simple color crayon (or other) on a plain piece of paper (or canvas) and then scan it to photoshop for modification. Don't you think?

When i first started working with photoshop, i remember being a bit frustated that i lost the feeling of control i had on what i wanted to do on plain paper or canvas. Maybe this new intuos tablet would give it back to me. Like i said, maybe the results would be the same if i just scan à picture of mine and load it into photoshop for fixes.

Never the less, i am anxious to see the great difference in your work and with my eyes. Please post me, so i can see. And thank you for taking your time to answer me.

Gale Franey  Pro User  says:

I think that you will find that you regain that feeling of complete control if you use the Intuos tablet with Photoshop. I've heard other artists who come from a traditional art background say the same thing. Using the Intuos tablet is almost identical to drawing on paper or canvas.

However, if you want to mix paint and use brush tools similar to real world painting, then I think the software Painter has some more organic brush options. I recently bought that software but haven't yet begun experimenting with it.

Yes, you can also draw on paper, scan it into Photoshop and continue to manipulate it, no problem. But the Intuos tablet gives you more freedom because you can paint on a layer that is sitting above another layer so that the 2 layers interact with one another. You can set the opacity, color, texture as you work, giving it just the right touch that is required, so this would be the easier way to work.

I can see now what your talking about when your saying interaction between layers over layers.

Anyways, i think your the right person to test this tablet since you have proven yourself and other (us) that you are an artist. I hope you will enjoy your new medium. As of for me, i have spent much to much this year to make this kind of purchase.

But i'm still curious... When you have the time, maybe you could make us a before and after so we could see how were missing out from this tablet ?
