Lucille

Lucille by Gale Franey.
This one took 4 days to create (with a 2 week break in between). I've been enjoying CS4. It's far more stable than CS3. It hasn't crashed at all. Works smoothly, except that I've not been able to get the OpenGL features to work. I'm not sure if this is due to my graphics card or operating system.

I was also playing with the 3D features and the 3D axis is not visible, even though I've selected it in the View menu. A mystery I need to figure out soon because I'll be teaching Photoshop at the college in April and need to be able to demonstrate how all these features work.

When Flickr resizes images it seems to add sharp edges, so this view isn't as soft as the original view. Best viewed at the larger size.

If you'd like to read more about the process I used to make this you can read more on my blog: galefraney.wordpress.com/2009/02/

Happy Update
Miraculously, The OpenGL features have begun working, along with the 3D Axis tool. I’m not certain what caused this because I did a number of different things while trying to troubleshoot the problem. I went to the NVIDIA website to update my Video card driver. You can choose an option to have the website automatically detect your video card and download the appropriate driver. However, after I installed the new driver, I noticed that the version number was lower than my prior version. This worried me, so I then went to my PC’s Windows Update by right clicking my Desktop, choosing Properties / Settings / Advanced / Adaptor / Properties / Driver / Update Driver. Although I had done this before and received a message that my driver was up to date, this time it actually updated the driver. I think this is what corrected the problem.

I can now do neat functions like Rotate Canvas which comes in handy for painting with a Wacom tablet. And Image Toss, which might sound like some mere gimmick, but believe me, when you have an enormuos document and are zoomed in to some detail and you need to pan to another area of the image, the pan glides as effortlessly as an Olympic skater and there is no blocky redraw lag time, Yipeeeeee !!!

There is also a new handy shortcut in CS4, if you Hold down your mouse while pressing the “H” Key while you are on any other tool. While still holding down both, you can slide around to any area of the image, then when you release the mouse it zooms into that area of the image. Very quick and wonderful way to get around a large, zoomed in image.

I also finally see the 3D Axis Tool, which is the most efficient way to manipulate the X, Y, and Z movements and rotations. I was so happy and relieved when these features began working that I felt tears come to my eyes. I never realized how important they were to me until I saw my reaction when they magically appeared. I am one very happy Photoshopper today !!!

hotopictures ... yes, I tried to make it like a 'modern day' fantasy.

Froggie ... It was refreshing working with this winter palette of colors, soft and earthy. Adding the bits of snow took time, but that was because I tend to tweak and tweak and tweak the smallest details until I'm finally satisfied with them. The great thing though is that with CS4 I can contort and distort layers that have masks and groupings and links to other layers without crashing. Once again it feels like CS2 where Photoshop never crashed. I stop worrying. With CS3 I was always worried about Photoshop crashing when I'd do simple distortions on large files with many layers.

Also, I went to see Coraline for the second time, in 3D. It is so fantastic. I especially like Mr. Bobinsky. He's soooooo funny!

Martin LaBar ... I think it was fixed by me first installing the wrong driver, then re-installing the updated driver. Somehow by re-installing the driver, the OpenGL features began to work properly. I'm soooo happy about this, especially that I don't have to go out and buy a new video card ! :-)

Hi artythejester ... I'll check out the photos when you upload them to Flickr :-)

postbag69 ... :-) Your enthusiasm made me smile

ilina s ... CS4 is fun, especially the OpenGL features that I finally got working ... but from a practical perspective, the tools and Filters I use for my art are even available in versions back to Photoshop 7. It's not essential to have these upgrades. I mostly use simple tools from the toolbox, lasso, brush, Masking, Blending Modes, painting with Blending Modes, Channel Mixer, Liquify, dodge & burn, Levels, Curves, .... and use other bells and whistles features less frequently. They are just the icing on the cake, but are not necessary to produce digital art. I began with version Photoshop 7.

I found CS3 to be unstable. It crashed a lot, whereas Photoshop 7 and CS never crashed. CS4 seems more stable, but that might just be my own operating system. CS3 might be fully stable on other people's computers. It's different for everyone, depending on the components, RAM, allocation of scratch disk space, etc.

The main reason I upgraded is because I had the CS3 Design Suite and with CS4, Flash has had a major upgrade and I also wanted to have the latest version of After Effects, so I upgraded to the CS4 Master Suite, which includes all the Adobe software. If it had been just a consideration of Photoshop, I might not have bothered with the upgrade because other than the glitzy OpenGL features, the other features are not vital. The content aware scale is quite amazing ... but really ... how many times will I actually use this?

If you use Adobe Bridge, it is now soooo fast, lightning speed. In past versions it was so slow that I never used it. Now it is fantastic .... but again, it's great for accessing and organizing your images, but not vital for creating digital art or correcting photographs.

Lynnette_Henderson ... I've now had an opportunity to get acquainted with the new OpenGL features. They are amazing and now I couldn't do without them. Especially when zoomed in on such high res. images with huge dimensions. All zoom levels are now crystal clear, whereas in prior versions of Photoshop only 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25% were accurate pixel renderings, all other zoom levels looked fuzzy and rough. With the new OpenGL every single zoom level gives perfect, accurate views.

And the immediate panning features with no blocky redraw lag time (on large images) is just so fantastic. And the canvas rotate, pressing the H key to momentarily zoom out, which speeds up panning across large, zoomed in mages. I now could never go back to CS3.

And in Bridge, simply by pressing the spacebar, thumbnail images become full screen view. Bridge is now sooooo fast, lightning speed. I've never been so happy with any prior Photoshop upgrade. This one is REALLY worth the upgrade. But you need to have a graphics card that is current enough to handle the OpenGL (there's a list of compatible graphics cards on the Adobe website). Also, ideally a computer should have a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM.

Gale Franey  Pro User  says:

Thanks everyone for such inspiring comments ! :-)

Ed_X ... CS3 was really unstable on my computer, but it's possible that it might not have set the scratch disk or other preferences correctly. When I installed CS4 I took the time to really tweak the preferences to take advantage of the maximum amount of RAM. But it feels so refreshing to be able to to some complex distortion without constantly worrying about Photoshop crashing half way through. Now that I've been using CS4 for a few weeks, I couldn't live without the OpenGL features. The continuous zoom and crisp resolution at every zoom level is too important. It used to be so frustrating only zoom levels of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 100% were crisp, and any other zoom levels, ie: 33.3 or any other was an approximation, not crisp. So when I was working, I'd have to continually zoom in or out to get a proper view, which really slowed down the work flow. Now it is so smooth and easy.

Ed_X says:

GaleIt did fine for a while and then I got the dreaded 'flickering cursor'. I tried just about any solution found on the web but nothing solved the issue permanently. I went back to CS2 and managed to get my money back from Adobe.
CS4 worked just fine right from out of the box, no problems with it whatsoever. I have not used all of its features yet, such as the OpenGL. I need to get used to a couple of small things being different though.
I guess CS3 is a failure we best quickly forget.

I am just in awe over your pictures and I realise that never in a million years will my photoshop skills even come close to yours ;-)
