I just looked at your settings... what was
this place illuminated with... a single
candle? Wow. Super dark.
I like this one though.
Looks like you got the hang of the 50mm! :)

Practically!!! It was dark as an arm pit!!
Best practice to be had is in extreme
situations.

Unfortunately this kind of lighting is normal
in NYC. Especially at Arlene's.

I think you did a good job in really
challenging small club (and all too common)
crappy lighting conditions.

@chris - Yeah, but for the first time ever I
didn't really mind it at all! I actually
like a lot from this set of photos.
@kathryn - Thanks so much! It was great
practice. This lens has been giving me grief
(the shallow DOF/focusing issues), and this
was a breakthrough.

Damn man, I can't even get low-noise photos
at ISO 650 with my D80... how'd ya do it!?
Haha

What kind of a lens are you using, Breakdown?
The wide aperture really makes a difference
here. There are a few wider angle shots in
this set that I shot with a lens with a
maximum aperture of f/2.8, and they were
quite noisy. This is a 50 mm f/1.8.

Your photo is a lot more convincing than his
grip on the guitar. Apart from that little
spot on the left, the background is
conveniently non existent and having only
subtly different hues (from coloured lights
probably) works really well (it tends to, for
concert shots).
Maybe just a tiny bit wider so the headstock
had some air to the right.
But a brilliant shot, really.

Couldn't get any wider with this lens,
unfortunately. Thanks for stopping by.

I wonder if you could easily fake it by
cloning out the light (?) on the left edge,
and then increasing the canvas size just a
tiny bit on the top and the right. Of course,
you'll have to be certain that the background
actually matches, such that it looks
seamless. I've never done that *cough* nope.

Hahahaha! Sounds like a lot of work for a
shot that's already served it's editorial
purpose! :o) I'm very much a proponent
for mostly SOOC shots, maybe some tweaks to
make something pop if it's lacking (or dial
down when it "pops" too much), or a
crop to bring the action closer, but I mostly
leave well enough alone. For the record,
this one is 100% SOOC, no edits at all.

Love the warm color. I too appreciate my 50
mm lens with the narrow aperture, works great
for concert shots!
