Monitor Spinner II -- Template

fold up, ie paper below line comes up
fold down. ie paper above line goes down
Monitor Spinner II -- Template by funnypolynomial.
PDF here.
This is the underside. Solid lines are cuts. Fold dash lines down, fold dash-dot lines up. Grey is discarded. The thin rectangular notches at top and bottom are to locate the ends of the fold from the other side (!). You get the idea. Make it look the photo. The sides are sloped to catch the air like a propellor. The center is a valley/peak fold to capture the pivot, the notched arms fold down to encompass the pivot shaft.
My pivot is made from a "Panel Wall Wire Hook", like this.

YouTube videos of them both spinning here and here.

Note that placement along the top of the LCD panel may make a difference to the RPM's. Some places seem hotter than others.
This photo has notes. Move your mouse over the photo to see them.

Very Cool! It will provide for hours of entertainment when my corporate network is down (which is often).

I agree, very cool. It would be nice if the template was laid out on the page so you could make several with one sheet of paper. It just seems like an awful waste of paper.

dukes_travel: Has the monitor been running for a while, does it feel warm to touch? Are you using a sharply-pointed pivot? The Make blog entry talks about a "paperclip" but it's really not, see the pic.

Sorry for the mix-up, I've adjusted the entry to specify aforementioned pointy-ness.

Totally awesome. I'm thinking of putting on on my desk lamp - if not I might just cook eggs on it.

fun, thanks!

For pointy, i just clipped the end of a paperclip at an angle with a pair of wire cutters. Made it plenty pointy.

I get about 1 rev per second on a 24" Dell LCD.

With a large paperclip, a pin, and a pair of small pliers I made a stable base that worked! Very cool.

You really do need a pin or some other sharp pointy wire. I first tried clipping a paperclip like rstrohmh but even after several cuts the spinner would revolve once then stop. Still too much friction or it wouldn't balance right.

Hmm, wonder what would happen if I enlarged the design...lamp spinner anyone? Reminds me of those propeller hats. :-)

Mechanical pencil lead works well as a base. Just scribble a pointy tip on it and tape or blu-tac it to the monitor.

I made one for my LCD, but there appears to be a static attraction between the frame and the spinner. The spinner always orients itself to one position, like some kind of cheap lame compass.

These are pretty cool. I make something that's similar using an aluminum can, some 12 guage copper wire and a "T" pin. The copper wire is bent into the shape of a stand and the T-pin is taped on vertically and fastened on permanently with a short piece of shrink tubing.
If you're interested, I have a video posted on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNOXDGE7uKQ
