Blue-headed Parrot (Pionus menstruus)

The Blue-headed Parrot, also known as the Blue-headed Pionus, is a medium large parrot. It is about 11 inches or 27 cm long. Its range is from Costa Rica south to Brazil. They are normally seen in pairs, but sometimes occurring in flocks of 10 to 20 individuals. I have found this bird to be very skittish and impossible to sneak up on. With the slightest movement they’re gone. The only way that I have been able to photograph this bird is to hide near a favorite perch and wait. I still need to get closer. Maybe next time.

Taken in Circasia, Quindío, Colombia.
