Lightshow

Better crop?
radio tower
I think this one happened almost at the same instance as the bigger one, and it's at the very edge of the pic. Cut it or leave it?
Lightshow by Frozen Coffee.
The thunderstorm caused a power outage that affected half of town, and I took the interruption as an excuse to go out hunting for lightning shots.

@all: thanks!

@young einstein: 15 seconds and f/2.8. This was shot away from the city, so I could use a wide aperture. The blackout helped minimizing light pollution too!

I got lots of black frames, and the most amazing lightnings happened between exposures of course :-)

This is really terrific! I know what you mean by "black frames"... happened to me before. In fact, I hae never succeeded in taking any lightning pictures. Did you use any tripod, by the way?

@Wolfy: Thanks!
@Airchild:
Maybe a hundred shots of inky black nothingness, a handful similar to the "M" image before, and then this. As I was finally getting the hang of it, I ran out of battery... The car window served as my tripod.

I'ts fantastic - I like it how it looks like the sun is coming through at the same time as the lightning!

Thanks Christel and Ludovic!

I was unable to come up with a better composition here. That lightning at the right happened to be just at the edge of the pic, and I couldn't bring myself to crop it away...

Nice!
I was so glad to see lightning in Fresno. I'm from somewhere that gets a lot of thunderstorms, so I miss rain and thunder.

I can't tell you to crop or not, it's your pic:-)

All I can say is, I like it the way it is, personally. I like the fact that the right-hand one sort-of mirrors the other one, with the tower in the middle, acting like a visual anchor of sorts.

I'm not being very clear here aren't I?

@eight59cc: Thanks for helping me feel better about this. I might try posting a closer crop some day.

That's impressive. These shots are not as easy as you make this one look.

Well done!

Personally, I would not crop this. The right hand strike adds drama and interest.

Great shot! Nature conspired to give you such a shot! Your being far away from the city, having a convenient support to steady the camera for the long exposure and the black out all helped create the situation. Of course your genius to seize the opportunity

I too think it's more interesting with the tower and second lightening bolt, but it may be more striking without them? (no pun intended)

Yes, I might try to see if a closer crop is more "striking"!
