roof-climbing

freeclimbing in Berlin, Friedrichshain; I shot 50 pics and gave them a CD-ROM, now they can study their sporty action on TV-screen at home, sitting on a sofa...
P.S.: because someone asked: it's not illegal; free-climbers are exercising there supported by professionals; you have to pay an entrance: berlin, friedrichshain, ravener street - it's geotagged [click on the map link, right side; yahoo map calls it friedrichs-BERG but the correct name of that neighbourhood (old East Berlin) is friedrichs-HAIN] - compare flickrcomments.wordpress.com/2011/04/22/weekly-photo-chal...

I think, me and my body, we are not able to learn this, even after exercising and taking lessons by a coach three years long...

Both photo have their particular appeal, but I like this one because of the climber's profile against the sky.
I can see this was a commercial climbing operation with additional handholds attached to the old structure, and the climbers are roped up and on belay. In the USA, the term "free climbing" usually refers to climbing without ropes and safety hardware.
Is that an old, concrete water tower they're climbing?

  13. emil11 (57 months ago | reply)

This is how I get to my office desk. Great shot!

  14. Frizztext (57 months ago | reply)

feedback for "anoldent": yes it's an old concrete water tower; I know, they are only exercising for the more dangerous freeclimbing without any hand-holds and ropes; it's a commercial meeting for urban sporty people, I think; I'm not a free-climber, but I tried to make a documentation of what is going on in the Berlin Friedrichshain neighbourhood...

feedback e-mail by the climber herself (parts of, ausschnitt):

    in english:
..But: sitting on a sofa, looking at these picture... I´ll do it again, that´s for sure! :)...

Its certainly not aid climbing (pulling on the protection), but its not free climbing though as they are protected by bolts as opposed to natural protection. Its more akin to sport climbing on artificial structures, just like indoor climbing walls.

Safe as houses when you have a top rope, We had no ropes on our bridge climb, but had lots of hand-rails..
This was real free climbing, I was mad then..
Took turns to run across the girders at the top of the arch...

This was without ropes too...on another bridge, 100s of kms away from the Sydney Harbour. On the drive into Wee Jasper Caves, we ran up the bridge at night and the day we drove home, we climbed it again.. to see what we had been up!
