In the right lower corner of the photo sits a red winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) on a cattail stalk (Typha latifolia). If you go to this spot right now you will find this same bird there. The red winged blackbird stakes out his territory a few meters across and stays there and defends it against other blackbirds and whoever else strays in to challenge him. The red wing blackbirds arrive in this area around the last week in February or the first week in March. They will stay until the onset of winter, then fly south. The clear cutting was done soon before this bird arrived. The red winged blackbirds will arrive here again in 2009, again at the end of February. Will this land be further degraded? Or will it be on the way to recovery?
