In the right lower corner of the photo sits a
red winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) on a cattail stalk (Typha latifolia). If you go to this spot right now you will
find this same bird there. The red winged
blackbird stakes out his territory a few
meters across and stays there and defends it
against other blackbirds and whoever else
strays in to challenge him. The red wing
blackbirds arrive in this area around the
last week in February or the first week in
March. They will stay until the onset of
winter, then fly south. The clear cutting
was done soon before this bird arrived. The
red winged blackbirds will arrive here again
in 2009, again at the end of February. Will
this land be further degraded? Or will it be
on the way to recovery?
