vintage man and woman from england

vintage man and woman from england by freeparking.
This woman is family, and is shown younger in this picture. It appears here that she's married and probably still in England. Edwardian times, I'm thinking.

With that haircut it is almost certainly post-Edwardian (1900-1910) and likely post-WWI. Bobbed hair was first introduced in America during World War I. No young woman would have had bobbed hair before 1914. Based on their clothing you can probably date this to between 1915 and 1920.

I still think this is pre-WWI...especially based on the previous picture of her, where she's a bit younger. But at this moment it's impossible for me to know for sure until I find out who she is. Which I still might be able to do.

I would agree with lucy that this is most likely post WWI. Only arty/ progressive/radical women in bohemian circles bobbed their hair before that time, although it is suggested that female munitions workers during the war started to cut their hair short for practical and safety reasons.

That said, its not certain that her hair is cut - she may have a fringe/bangs and have her long hair gathered at the back of her head.

The young man has a fold down collar, which may even be attached to the shirt rather than the usual seperate stiff collar. This was a recent innovation, and only a few daring young middle class men ventured to wear it from just before WWI.

That's interesting, but also confusing. I was pretty sure this girl is in England, which would make it more turn of the century in her previous photo. But she IS older here, so it could be post WWI...if she's that much older. I hope I can find more info on her in the future...

Thanks!

Well if the other picture is slightly later than your previous estimate, that might make a better fit. She's still a young woman here!

If you have her name and place of birth you could try the 1901 Census Online and see if you can place her. Its a wonderful resource, but you do have to pay a small fee.

Dating photographs is a tricky business!

She's one of my favorite people in all the photographs, so I hope I can find out too.
