vintage cowboy: arizona outlaw

serious veins!
vintage cowboy: arizona outlaw by freeparking.
This is a vintage picture of a cowboy criminal, or so my grandparents told me. I don't know what the crime was, or the year. Not unusual for my family's collection, since my great-grandpa and probably others in the family were lawmen in the Arizona area, especially around the Globe and Ray areas, which were mining towns.

but why would he be a criminal? can't he be just a less fortunate relative?

It's a mugshot, basically. I have others like this, other men. My past relatives were lawmen in Arizona, and even my grandmother and mom knew these were pictures of criminals.

Sorry, I don't see this guy as a criminal. He appears to be standing in front of a painted canvas backdrop of some kind, either religious-themed or pioneer-themed, and the floor is a tiled or painted parquet. No cuffs, no shackles. His boots and hat seem to be in pretty good shape, and his beard and hair are neatly trimmed. The coat, shirt and pants all look a little trail-worn, but there are no holes I can see. He looks more like a farm or ranch worker who decided to have his picture taken at the annual county/state fair. I'm thinking that thing in his hands is some kind of flyer, program or perhaps religious pamphlet. Also, the picture shows signs in the corners of having been mounted. This was somebody loved by family, don't you think? If your relatives are lawmen, this may have been one of their deputies.

If you copy this pic and take it into Photoshop, there's some inverted lettering on the lower edge that says "Eastman-Nitrate-Kodak 122." Type 122 film was introduced in 1903, and was 3-1/4 x 5-1/2, according to this site: www.sharlot.org/archives/photographs/19th/boo k/chapter_3....

Something else odd: His feet appear strangely small compared to his hands.

I think this guy looks like a friendly law abider and hard farmer, not like a criminal to me either, either way, a cool pic of a cool looking vintage cowboy! Just love it!

Not all sherrifs had their own camera for mug shots, and often they would march the outlaw over to the local photo studio to have their picture taken. I believe that might explain the backdrop and all...

Varmint or no, this is truly a terrific photograph. The expression on this man's face strikes me as so....poignant and forlorn. And he has such a handsome face! It is definitely provocative and I do find myself wondering about the story behind this photo. I don't really get a 'criminal' vibe from the picture regardless of the 'trompe l'oeil' backdrop. I'm not sure what's going on in his mind...

Outlaw, deputy or farmer, I love the pic (though outlaw makes a much better story) :)

NEVER judge a man by what he looks like.... He LOOKS like a criminal? Jeffery Dahmer did int LOOK like a criminal, neither did john wayne gacy.. i think his family probably knows best. You can tell alot from a picture, but not that much!
Surely someone taking a glamor shot back then wouldnt be holding a scroll of paper (arrest warrant ?charges?) A glam shot with no Woman, child, guns....
