Canal, Wolverhampton.

Canal, Wolverhampton. by Fray Bentos.
On Saturday 31st January 1970, one of the most vilely cold days I can ever remember, I set out to walk along the canal from Wolverhampton into the centre of Birmingham. I was repeating an expedition I had made some six weeks earlier. On that occasion I had packed it in at Smethwick. This time, even though I was wearing an ex-army greatcoat, I was so cold that I gave up at Dudley Port. I had to wait shivering on the platform of Tipton Station for about 45 minutes for the train that would take me on the first leg of the trip home to Bristol. I had taken a few photos along the way. I see that on some occasion long ago, when I was nearer to the event than I am now, I marked the grid reference of this photograph on the back of the original print. SO925981 would be somewhere around Monmore Green. I am inclined to doubt this now and would place the pic somewhere around Lanesfield. Perhaps someone can put me right.

Sorry, I can't help with the location, but travelled many times between New Street and Wolverhampton by train circa '72-74. The railway ran close to the canal at several points.

This images is so evokative of the real gritty industrial West Midlands.

Take a look now - many of the factories have gone, to be replaced by residential and retail developments.

I first became familiar with this weirdly beautiful tract of the west Midlands when I travelled a few times to Manchester by train in 1968 and 69. As you say, the railway runs close to the canal at several points. It became an ambition of mine to walk the canal from Wolverhampton into Birmingham. I did it twice. I have a few more pics which I will post soon.

When I first saw this I thought it might have been on the canal north of Wolverhampton. As a kid I used to take the train to Wolverhampton and then walk the towpath up to Stafford Road (Great Western locomotive depot or shed). This was where all the large express locomotives were serviced. Until I saw this photo the entire episode of my life was a distant memory. As r99 says, the area is now totally different with most of the chimneys gone, distribution warehouses everywhere and pleasure boats on the canals! Please keep these photos coming, they are fascinating.

Thank you very much. The location is definitely south from Wolverhampton. I never ventured northwards. I shall have to get around to walking it again and see if I can find these places.

The cooling tower belonged to the old Wolverhampton Power Station in Commercial Road; the canal passing to the rear of the site. The cooling tower was demolished in late 1977, but the main power station building still stands that fronted Commercial Road.

Hope this helps, and Happy New Year.

During the late 80's and early 90's I travelled the canals in a circular route from Stourport to Worcester taking in Wolverhampton, back then there was still plenty of industrial dereliction to be enjoyed..very atmospheric of a time gone..the railway alongside the canal is mainly electrified if memory serves..
