This is a picture of the great 36-inch refractor telescope of the Lick Observatory at Mount Hamilton, California. The observatory dome is big but it would take an ultra-wide-angle lens to take such a picture, with a field of view of about 150° horizontally and 120° vertically. Instead of this, this picture is a composite of three rows of three shots each, taken free-hand with a Nikon D70 and a Nikkor 18-70mm lens at the wide end, stitched in rectangular projection with Pano Tools.
