A drag of a fag on Shop Street

A drag of a fag on Shop Street

The Revolution was going on at one end of Shop Street in Galway (see my last three pictures), while further down the street life went on as normal!

Some of the 'give us a fag' brigade, and there seemed to be a lot of them out and about on the day, did wander down when they heard the protestors shout: "What do we want?" but came away almost immediately somewhat disappointed at what was on offer - "A Revolution". I expect they may well have heard it all before, back to the time when Pat Rabbitte and Eamon Gilmore (two of our current Government Ministers) were making more or less similar demands in their radical student days in Galway!

If anyone wants to start a revolution in Galway my advice would be to start it with free fags and free porter and even if success cannot be guaranteed, I can, at least, guarantee that the proletariat will be happy!

Revolutionary with Bic biro

Revolutionary with Bic biro

This is one of the student leaders at the Socialist protest at AIB Bank, Lynch's Castle, Galway where the question posed by his comrade, the man with the megaphone (see my earlier picture) was "What do we want?", and the reply was "A Revolution."

A philosophical question arises (and revolutions always come with philosophical questions): If the pen is mightier than the sword, what's the status of the bic biro?

The Socialist Worker

The Socialist Worker

Taken as students protested outside, and later inside, AIB Bank at Lynch's Castle, Shop Street, Galway, calling for "A Revolution" in answer to the chant from their leader (the man with the megaphone in my last posting): "What do we want?"

You cannot, of course, have a revolution without also having someone selling 'The Socialist Worker'

"What do we want?": "A Revolution"

"What do we want?": "A Revolution"

I was in Galway yesterday as a group of young socialists (students from the University, I presume), staged a protest outside the AIB bank at Lynch's Castle. Their main chant, called out by this young man on his megaphone, was: "What do we want" to which the group reply was: "A Revolution".

They subsequently "occupied" the bank and the Gardai (Police) were eventually called. I'm not sure whether anyone will face charges at a later stage over the event, but somehow or other I doubt it. If they do they will probably fare better than one of the Lynch family, whose former dwelling this premises had been. He was accused of murder and the then Mayor of Galway had him hanged. The Mayor just happened to have been his father!

An interesting place to start a revolution!

Posing: but not for me

Posing: but not for me

This beautiful young lady was posing for another photographer when I spotted her. I thought it was a pity not to get a couple of shots too, and I'm glad I did!
