Seixal bay has been for several centuries an important location for naval construction and repair, with several shipyards working along its shores. Besides the ferries, which perform the crossing of the Tagus and Sado Rivers, it was common to see fishing ships, along other types, going there for maintenance and refurbish.

Many of those boats were the fishing ships used in the capture of the codfish in the northern seas in Atlantic Ocean, like Newfoundland in Canada, or in the North Sea in the Norway. In fact, the Seixal Bay area was also one of the places where the codfish was unloaded and dried before selling.

Nowadays the naval repair industry is dead, except for a couple shipyards. Others still exist but have stopped and many abandoned wrecks and unfinished ships can be observed.
