Looks like Dad's been the straight-and-narrow, hard-working kind, hell-bent on maintaining the old ways--very Republican, very 1950s. Mom's got an artistic bend--she's bold and liberal and perhaps just a little worn out by her husband's strict ideals. And the little one thinks his parents are full of it--he's doing his own thing with the bright orange (an intentional contrast from his mother's blue). He thinks newer is better, thus the plastic.
