Gomez on 'The Light-Speed Escalator'

Gomez on 'The Light-Speed Escalator' by Brian Shaler.
Thanks everyone! Want to read the full story behind this photo? Click Here

6 second exposure of Josh going down an escalator. Taken at the Brickyard on Mill in Tempe, AZ at a Refocus Phoenix meeting. James Archer posted a photo of me setting up for this photo here. Behind Josh, the ceiling is painted with clouds, and there are LEDs that gradually shift in color. It was a great place to get out of the rain and take some photos!

If you like this effect, you might enjoy the rest of my Light in Motion set!

It blew me away how well this one turned out. I think it's a tough call between this shot and the new ShalerJump you took.

long exposure is to get the correct light on a pic???

Brian Shaler  Pro User  says:

Thanks Ruth_asg, lighttripper, sellyona, and *davidsαngle!!

@pepenut: The exposure of a photo is talking about the amount light in the photo (over-exposed = too much light; under-exposed = not enough light). However, when someone says "long exposure" it means that they left the shutter open for a longer period of time. For this photo, I had the shutter open for 6 seconds. Because the escalator was moving, you see bright streaks from where the light was when I started the exposure to where it was 6 seconds later. Gomez had to sit very still for 6 seconds while I took the picture, or else he would have ended up being blurry.

Thanks again, everyone!

@stephenc_irl: This is a picture of me about to take this picture. As you can see, I rested my tripod on one of the steps. Everything that isn't moving in the exact same way as the escalator got blurred. As for the lights, I think most of the streaks you see are actually reflections from the glass sides. The lights are near the top of the escalator to light up the ceiling.

@psyreactor: We were going downward. I got on the escalator first, turned around, and set up. Then he got on and sat down facing forward.

Brian, I think the reason this photo isn't appearing in Explore is because of the very small ratio of favorites to views. Right now your photo is being added as a favorite .4% of the time it is being viewed. In my experience with getting photos in Explore, you need a high ratio of favorites to views.

Great shot nonetheless! What a cool effect.

@richietown: I think I agree with you on that. I was mainly perplexed about it not showing up when Explore first came up at midnight. There were a few minutes before it hit the front page of Digg where it was more statistically viable for a high rank in Explore. I think it was around 5% Fav/View

Oh well, I think I'd rather have the front page of Digg than the front page of Flickr anyway :-)
