The allure of the purple tones that showed up in the water just after the sun went down proved irresistible. I absolutely love the Pacific Northwest!

Image notes: Single frame with 2 stop ND grad and straight ND to help get as long of an exposure as possible. The longer exposure was key in order to fully express these purple tones and of course obtain the foggy/milky textures on the water.

A ND grad is a graduated neutral density filter. And that is basically a square filter (glass or the kind of plastic they make glasses out of) with one end that is clear and one that adds 1-4+ stops of exposure time to the shot depending on which version you own. I use either or both a 2 stop and 3 stop to help even out the exposure/dynamic range between the sky and foreground.

A further distinction is if you use a soft or hard edge for the transition between where the filter is clear and where it's shaded. The soft edges are good for when you don't have a straight horizon line and the soft for more irregular horizons like mountains.

Of the brands to try there is a fairly inexpensive Cokin P mounting system (be careful of vignetting on wide angle lenses, they have some versions better for these lenses) and what probably is a better system from Lee (I would love to try it someday, but have not). For the filters themselves Cokins are reputed to have bit of a color cast at times but they are the most affordable. Yet for not much more you can get the Hitech brand which generally avoid the casts. The top of the line, but for more money are the Lee and Singh-Ray brand filters. To learn more about these handy tools you might want to surf Singh-Rays site here. And be sure to read about the reverse grads as well. I use a soft-edged glass Tiffen 2 stop, a hard-edged 3 stop Hitech and a 3 stop reverse Singh-Ray in my kit. Hope that helps!
