Fresh Dog Day Cicada

Fresh Dog Day Cicada by Fort Photo.
A Dog Day Cicada (Tibicen canicularis) that has just finished molting after emerging from the ground as a nymph. You can see the abandoned skin under the top of the insect. They are incredibly beautiful at this "just reborn" phase when their wings are still so fresh.

Update on the species. A professor at CSU has indicated to me that the species I thought it was doesn't occur in Colorado. Doh! He indicates he would need a specimen to be sure, but he thinks it might be T. dealbatus (Davis). And here I thought I had checked the range maps and had a good guess. Heh.

WOW! Definitely deserving of a specanimal invite. Never seen this and the detail is outstanding. Is this the common cicada we see around here? I've always seen a differently colored cicada but maybe they change color as they age. Thanks for sharing.
