Another Thunderstorm + Star Trails combo. In this case a bit of twilight leftovers comes through the long exposure and adds some sunset colors with those pretty blues (it looked completely dark when this was taken).
Notes: Very little photoshop was used save for removing the noise and a bit of LAB color correction. A good trick to removing chunky noise I've developed for long exposures is to first create an edge mask on a copied layer, select the inverse of that and then apply the dust and scratches filter. Hopefully the edge mask caught most of the star trails to prevent them from being destroyed by the dust and scratches filter. If not, simply add a mask and paint back the star trails on the mask with a black brush which will remove the dust and scratches filter from wherever you paint. Works about as good as anything I've tried.

That's cloud cover making the upper right
corner so much darker and is why there are no
star trails. Clouds also explain why some
star trails are broken or spotty.

Does your camera have a long exposure noise
reduction feature? Mine does, otherwise I
would never do low-light or night shots.
Anyway, whatever you did, this image is
fantastic! I love the tension between the
wisps of clouds shooting toward us and the
stars moving across them.

I shoot with a D70 currently, and it does
have long exposure noise reduction. And
without it on I wouldn't even try (well I did
once, ick lol). That said there is quite a
lot of noise even with it on... in particular
I get this black chunky noise speck stuff
that is a bit of a pain to remove (see my
steps above). Tungsten slide film is still a
great choice for star trails to avoid some of
these issues in my opinion.

Another beautiful combo FP - I just shot some
last night as we had a storm here but I've
yet to download them to see how they turned
out. The composition here is as masterful as
ever with the cloudstream from the long
exposure counterpointing the start trails
beautifully. And the colours - isn't the deep
dusk light magnificent!
