Holborn, by Chancery Lane, possibly right where it becomes High Holborn.

Yes mondoagogo, was it too easy? I wasn't trying to be difficult, I just love this building, that part of town is fantastic for the contrast of old and new buildings.

Geotagged now, you can zoom right in on the building in google maps. Take a step back here and see it in context, a bit more of the modern world intruding.

Staple Inn - its a reconstruction! Destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt ten years later. It's been rebuilt, remodelled and refurbished a few times.

The beamed frontage was covered up with plaster after the Great Fire (which it narrowly missed) until 1887, so this reconstruction takes it back to how it looked originally.

The courtyard was on GWL recently.

So it is, though that says "extensively restored" rather than rebuilt - it's pretty wonky.

Not being a smoker, I never realised that.

there used to be a fabulous old style tobacco / cigar shop there, I think it sells shirts or phones now :o(

I just recognised it because a) I used to work a few doors down from there a couple of years ago and b) I often go past it on the bus, so I'm very familiar with it from that angle.

The tobacco shop is still there, though there is a phone shop there too (looking a bit out of place in that setting). Though the tobacco shop no longer has the sign which says "Thank you for smoking" in the window.

This is the first time I've actually managed to be the first in line to make a correct guess though, so now I feel smug...

It's one of my favourite corners of London, and I was lucky enough to go to a wedding reception there last year - it's a fabulous place.

I am thinking that somewhere along the line, the maps went skewiff. None of the photos that WorldFlickr is inviting to join his group are even next to the landmarks he's suggesting! Weird.
